Brewery of the Month – December 2021

Icewind Brewing opened its doors at one of the worst possible times, right in the middle of a pandemic!  On the bright side, the only place they can go is UP!

Early in 2020 they purchased the Drumconrath Brewery in Mapleton, North Dakota and expanded their taproom to seat over 100 people. Two of the owners (Rick and Tyler) are accomplished homebrewers with over 100 homebrew competition medals between them. They have two brew systems, one is a 2 barrel system, that they make a lot of pilot and unique brews on and also a 7 barrel system which they use to brew their flagship beers.  Icewind likes to focus on classic styles like pilsners and stouts, and they don’t chase the “hype” beers according to Rick Brandvold. They do plan on starting a barrel aging program this winter and plans are in the works to expand distribution to Minnesota in early 2022.

Icewind hosted a large Oktoberfest party this year and plans are to make it a tradition in Mapleton. This year they had the mayor of Mapleton tap the first keg! They will also have a Bockfest celebration in the spring where they will do a traditional “bock poking” which is when you dip a hot stick into a batch of beer to release the carbonation and caramelize the flavor…. sounds like fun!!  Looking forward to all the things to come from Icewind!!   Prost!!

Sundog Golden Lager: Sundogs are most commonly seen on very cold days…Luckily, this Sundog can be found year-round. Brewed with pilsner malt and noble hops, Sundog is an easy-drinking lager with a crisp finish!  ABV: 5.0%, IBU: 12

Black Knight Milk Stout: None. Shall. Pass… on this milk stout! Lactose sugar lends a smooth body and light creaminess to complement the coffee & dark chocolate notes from the roast malt. Flavorful, yet sessionable, this stout moves for no man.  ABV: 5.1%,  IBU: 23

Ludicrous Speed Hazy IPA: In today’s fast-paced world of hazy IPAs, you have to take risks – we didn’t. We simply jumped into a smooth, juicy pale ale double dry-hopped with a dank blend of Idaho 7 and Citra for a tropical fruit punch to your thrusters.  ABV: 5.4%, IBU: 48

Razburied Raspberry Sour: Bury your taste buds in this fruity, refreshing ale! Kettle soured to enhance the fruit flavor, then refermented on loads of real raspberries for a bright aroma and gorgeous pink hue. Intensely fruity, lightly sour and highly drinkable… What’s not to love!  ABV: 4.9%, IBU: 7
