Legendary 2020 Vintage BordeauxThe Legendary 2020 Vintage Bordeaux has landed in North Dakota! This was a vintage of extremes in Bordeaux, with both challenging weather and pandemic lockdowns. Yet 2020 has produced a number of excellent wines and in parts can be confirmed as the conclusion of a great trilogy. Comparatively, the 2020 vintage offers a combination of the 2005 and 2016 vintages in terms of structure and refinement – more elegant and fresh than the ripe and opulent 2018 and a more focused but less immediately charming than the 2019. The general consensus is that the 2020 Bordeaux vintage is an excellent vintage, so much so, it is likely to be considered a legendary modern classic in the years to come.
Château Lafite Rothschild—2020
This is pretty much as close to entirely Cabernet Sauvignon as Bordeaux gets (92%) and yet it has an incredibly fine, gentle richness to the tannins. They build up pretty quickly though, so that by the end of the palate you start to feel the closing in and tightening, deftly underscoring how well this will age. The kaleidoscope of flavors and aromatics that Lafite does so well is fully on display, nothing trying too hard, a velvet texture to the tannins where the cassis fruit, earth, crushed stone and graphite is held in from beginning to end. You must understand it to understand the great Lafites of the past and those of the future. Best after 2030.

Château Figeac—2020
The 2020 Figeac is the finest wine that has been bottled to date at this estate since its renaissance began a decade ago. A mesmerizing nose here with flowers such as violets and red roses, then shows cherries and currants with some mineral and black truffles. Full-bodied yet so refined and harmonized with ultra-fine tannins that run the length of the wine. Flavors of perfectly ripened fruit (al dente) with a hazelnut character that comes from the seeds. Incredibly transparent young red—breathtaking. 37% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Franc and 31% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Château Ducru Beaucaillou—2020
This is another legendary Ducru Beaucaillou in the making. The 2020 is full-bodied, concentrated, and layered, it has incredible purity in its cassis and darker, almost blue fruits, some classic yet primary tobacco, graphite, and mineral notes, a dense mid-palate, and awesome length on the finish. It is not a Ducru-Beaucaillou that goes out to deliver finesse or understatement, but one that you will have to cellar for a few years, pull out and have the superlatives ready.

Château Pontet-Canet—2020
The magnificent structure and balance of this wine are powerful. It shows poise between the aromas of blackcurrants and black cherries with hints of crushed walnuts, grilled thyme, cocoa powder and graphite. It’s full-bodied with layers of ultra-fine, silky tannins that elegantly coat your palate, allowing the juicy and vibrant fruit to shine. Delicate and pristine, yet compact with lots of energy and power to uncover in the coming years. It lasts for minutes and is delicious now. The purity of fruit is really impressive. 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot.
