Weingut Joh. Jos. Prüm

Joh. Jos. Prüm is easily one of Germany’s most famous wine producers. The estate is based in the village of Wehlen on the banks of the Mosel, and produces top-quality Rieslings that are noted for their balance and longevity due to the always extremely late harvest each year. J.J. Prüm’s wines are highly collectable and often reach very high prices at auction.

The Prüm family has been making wine in the Mosel for several hundred years, but Joh. Jos. Prüm was founded properly in 1911, by Johann Josef Prüm. The estate was taken over by his brother Sebastian in 1920, the year that Joh. Jos. Prüm created its first sweet Auslese wine, and from there went on to become one of Germany’s most well-known and highly respected wines. It has remained in the family since.

Joh. Jos. Prüm has some 20 hectares (50 acres) of vines spread out over several Erste Lage vineyards. Almost half of these are found in the Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard, which makes a range of styles under the Prädikatswein system, including Auslese, Beerenauslese, Eiswein and Trockenbeerenauslese. The crown jewels of the estate are its sites in the Wehlener Sonnenuhr and Graacher Himmelreich—two adjacent vineyards know to produce many of the world’s most age worthy wines. The wines of Wehlener Sonnenuhr tends towards richness, structure and complexity at a more relaxed pace while Graacher Himmelreich leans more towards clarity and focus that jumps at you a bit more quickly.

This wonderful Mosel Kabinett has a wide spectrum of white tree fruit, wild berry and herb aromas. Impressive concentration on the very focused light-bodied palate. It has racy acidity and pronounced slatey minerality that is wrapped around the very long and clean finish. Drink or hold.

This fine Spatlese offers a finely smoky and minty nose of slightly riper and yellow fruits, almond cream, jasmine, passion fruit, pear, juniper, muscade, smoke, and a touch of licorice. The wine has good presence and animating yellow fruits mixed to candied grapefruit. The finish is broad and powerful yet the aftertaste remains fine and elegant. Drink or hold.
