Plumpjack 2019 Estate Collection

The PlumpJack Group was founded in 1992 by Gavin Newsom, a San Francisco entrepreneur and future Governor of California, and Gordon Getty, a San Francisco composer and philanthropist. They opened a wine store called PlumpJack Wines in the Fillmore neighborhood of San Francisco. Over the next five years, the business expanded to include a boutique hotel and three restaurants. PlumpJack Winery was founded in 1997 when the PlumpJack Group acquired a century-old 53 acres vineyard in Napa Valley on Oakville Cross Road. The name of the company is inspired by “the roguish spirit of Shakespeare’s Sir John Falstaff (Henry IV), dubbed Plump Jack by Queen Elizabeth.”

PlumpJack Winery was the first Napa Valley winery to use the Stelvin screwcap closure on its most expensive bottling. John Conover, General Manager of the winery, announced at the Napa Valley Wine Auction that half (150 cases) of PlumpJack’s 1997 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon would be available upon release with a screwcap, and that those bottles would cost $10 USD more than those in the cases closed with cork. At $135 per bottle, many in the wine industry were skeptical of the decision.

Sitting on 42-acres in Oakville, Napa Valley, their Estate Vineyard yields an intricate array of soils that allows them to cultivate wines known for intriguing complexity. The east side of their Estate lies along the foothills of the Vaca Mountain Range, where well-draining hillside soils yield grapes of bold fruit character. To the west, their Estate reaches the Napa River flood zone, where vines take root in rich, deep clay soils, yielding grapes with soft, supple varietal character.

Plumpjack Estate Cabernet Sauvignon—2019

The nose of the 2019 PlumpJack Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Oakville, bursts with juicy blackberry, dark plum, boysenberry, and muddled raspberry. These fruit aromas mingle with hints of cardamom, cinnamon, molasses, damp earth, iron, and sage. The palate has a gorgeous, silky entry expressing blackberry, plum, spice, molasses, and sage notes. The wine is beautifully structured with finely integrated, velvety tannin and an exceptionally long finish.

Cade Howell Mountatin Estate Cabernet Sauvignon—2019

On the nose are aromas of cola, blueberry, red cherry, cocoa nibs, baking spices, and dried cranberries, followed by flavors of boysenberry, black cherry, elderberry, dark chocolate, clove, and licorice. It finishes with bramble, amaretto, and dried blue/black fruits. This wine has a classic Howell Mountain structure and tannin — big and bold but balanced in approach. The cooler vintage produced wines with higher perceived acidity and exceptional red fruit flavors and aromas.

Blend: 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, 5% Merlot, 3% Malbec

Odette Estate Cabernet Sauvignon—2019

The 2019 Odette Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Stags Leap District, offers notes of wild blackberry compote, sweet black raspberries, currants, crème de cassis, and licorice with hints of violets, cloves, anise, and exotic spices. This lavish, full-bodied wine is decadent and mouth-filling, with copious layers that stain the palate. Vibrant acidity adds freshness and verve, complementing the purity of the fruit and leading to a long persistent finish.

Blend: 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 6% Malbec, 2% Petit Verdot
