DESCHUTES BREWERY

BEER OF THE MONTH – MAY 2021

WRITTEN BY: Mike L. – Deschutes Sales Manager

In 1988, Gary Fish established a small brewpub in downtown Bend, Oregon and named it after the iconic waterway flowing through town, the Deschutes River (pronounced da shootz). With a belief that good beer brings people together, Gary founded The Deschutes Brewery & Public House as just that – a home for the public.  A community gathering place, where friends, family and strangers could come together over some great food and a house-brewed pint of beer.

Original Bend Oregon Pub

In its first year, the public house sold 310 barrels of beer. Today, the brewery sells more than 225,000 barrels of beer each year and Deschutes can be found in 32 states and even a few countries. Over the years, Deschutes Brewery has expanded beyond the original pub with a brewery and tasting room less than a mile across town on the banks of the Deschutes River in Bend, a second pub in downtown Portland, and a tasting room in Roanoke, Virginia.

TASTING NOTES

Fresh Squeezed IPA

Juicy, sweet hop aromas of grapefruit and passionfruit. Hops carry through a muffin-like malt character rounding out this full-flavored IPA into a thing of beauty like no other. Savor every last drop of tropical refreshment with this juicy blend of citrusy hops balanced by a lively malt body.  Over 300 pounds of hops per brew in the brewhouse, this beer led us to double passing through or hop back to increase hop aroma and flavor.  ABV: 6.4%, IBUs: 60.

Fresh Haze IPA

Hop aromas of mandarin orange, pineapple and light mango with a pillowy sweet, juicy mouthfeel. Soak up the soft golden rays of an inviting malt body as the lively hues of citrusy hops linger on the horizon of a cool, refreshing finish.  The first beer to get to market from Deschutes pilot brewery had to be a sticky “high pulp” hazy addition to our Fresh Family with late addition bursts of citrusy hops.  ABV: 6.5%, IBU: 45.

Lil’ Squeezy Juicy Ale

Kick back with this breezy blend of juicy hops and delicate malt character that is dripping with fresh citrus flavors and zesty aroma.  Refreshingly juicy. Effortlessly drinkable. Freshly Squeezed. No fruit was harmed in the making of this beer.  ABV: 5%, IBU: 40.

Obsidian Stout

Brave the unfathomable depths of black barley and roasted malt amidst dark passages of rich chocolate and distinct notes of espresso.  Onyx exterior. Intriguing depth. Endless exploration. Explore this bold stout’s seemingly infinite layers to experience an award-winning ale for the ages.  ABV: 6.4%, IBU: 55.
